The Walkerston-Pleystowe RSL sub-branch commemorated the service of veterans of operations in the Middle East since 1946 with a commemorative service and dinner on Saturday 15 October 2022.
Veterans from across Central Queensland and their partners were joined by RSL Queensland State Vice-President, and Middle East veteran, Bill Whitburn and hosted by Walkerston-Pleystowe sub-branch President Rod Francisco, also a Middle East veteran.
The service and dinner were graciously supported by Major-General Jake Ellwood, DSC AM CSC who spoke at both, reinforcing the sense of community that veterans enjoy whilst on operations and seek out when returning home.
The occasion was well supported by members of the sub-branch who create that sense of community around the sub-branch and beyond.
The service, conducted in ANZAC Park in Walkerston, concluded with the playing of Amazing Grace by Ian Dean of the Mackay and District Pipe Band as the sun set over the ANZAC Park. Following the service, an evening of banter, remembrance, camaraderie, and fellowship was enjoyed at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel.
